The Chicago Cubs made a blockbuster move this offseason, acquiring star outfielder Kyle Tucker from the Houston Astros.
With just one year remaining before free agency, Tucker is poised to cash in next winter – and some around MLB believe he could land a deal worth $400 million or more.
One executive from a small-market team didn’t hesitate when discussing Tucker’s value.
“The numbers are crazy these days but if he has a Tucker-like year, how can he not command $400 million or more?” the executive told ESPN. “I’m not saying this either way, but some people believe he’s better than Soto.”
The 28-year-old Tucker has quietly been one of baseball’s most complete players, blending elite hitting with standout defense.
While Juan Soto grabbed headlines with a 15-year, $765 million deal from the New York Mets this offseason, some in the game believe Tucker is just as – if not more – valuable.
The biggest difference? Age… Soto hit free agency after his age-25 season and was coming off a career-best year with the New York Yankees.
Tucker, on the other hand, will turn 29 next winter, meaning he won’t get a deal as long as Soto’s. However, his production speaks for itself.
Before suffering an injury in 2024, Tucker was on an MVP-caliber pace, posting a staggering 180 wRC+ and 4.2 WAR in just 78 games, per FanGraphs.
On a rate basis, he was just as dominant as Soto last season – while also being a significantly better defender.
Soto’s offensive firepower is what has made him a generational talent, but since 2021, Tucker has been right there with him in terms of overall production.
Given his blend of elite hitting, defense, and postseason experience, it’s easy to see why he’ll be one of the most coveted free agents next offseason.
The Cubs have a year to decide whether they can – or will – keep Tucker long-term.
The outfielder will undoubtedly have plenty of suitors, and with free-agent contracts skyrocketing, the bidding war could push his price tag into the $400 million range.
For now, Chicago is focused on the present, knowing they have one of baseball’s best players in their lineup.
But if Tucker delivers another superstar season, retaining him beyond 2025 will be a major challenge.
What are your thoughts on the insiders who feel that Tucker is actually a better player than Juan Soto?
I know we still have an entire season to play, but if you had to guess, where do you think Tucker will be playing this time next season???
