The Toronto Blue Jays are facing a critical situation with star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
The second-generation MLB talent had set a deadline for a contract extension with the team, but that date has passed without an agreement in place.
Despite not having a new deal, Guerrero Jr. remains on track to become a free agent after the 2025 MLB season.
In January, the 25-year-old signed a one-year, $28.5 million deal for his final year of arbitration eligibility.
Given Guerrero’s status as one of the game’s premier hitters, it’s no surprise that teams are already positioning themselves for a possible future acquisition.
The Boston Red Sox, in particular, have emerged as an early favorite to land Guerrero Jr., with rumors swirling ahead of the 2025 season.
MLB insider Jon Heyman of the MLB Network mentioned Boston, along with the New York Yankees and the New York Mets, as teams to watch in the race for the power-hitting star.
“(Very) early favorites to land Vlad Jr. this winter: 1. Red Sox 2. Mets (assuming Pete opts out) 3. Yankees,” Heyman revealed on X.
Guerrero Jr. is not the only key player the Blue Jays could lose at the end of the season.
Shortstop Bo Bichette’s contract is also set to expire, adding further uncertainty to Toronto’s future. There is a real possibility the Blue Jays could lose both stars either through free agency or trades.
At just 25 years old, Guerrero is in the prime of his career, with his best seasons potentially still ahead.
The Blue Jays’ cleanup hitter posted a .323/.396/.544 slash line in the 2024 season, hitting 30 home runs and driving in 103 RBIs. His 165 OPS+ was the second-best of his career.
Guerrero Jr. has finished in the top 10 of American League MVP voting twice, including a runner-up finish in 2021 to Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani.
Meanwhile, the Red Sox are celebrating a major win of their own, having signed veteran infielder Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million deal this offseason, adding another key piece to their lineup.
