Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s 2024-25 MVP, is a guy who’s seen just about everything on the hardwood. But even he had a moment of surprise during the Oklahoma City Thunder’s impressive 118-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 2 of the conference finals. Imagine his reaction when he spotted his wife seated next to another man—definitely a second glance moment!
Thankfully, that gentleman was none other than Chris Paul, Gilgeous-Alexander’s friend and former Thunder teammate. The star guard dished out some good-natured humor about the scenario, recalling how it caught him off guard. “I had to double take,” he admitted. “I was like, ‘Who is that sitting with my wife?’ I got a little tight, but then I saw it was Chris [Paul] and thought, ‘Alright, cool.'”
Paul, a 12-time NBA All-Star, was in the building at Paycom Center supporting his old teammate as Gilgeous-Alexander celebrated his achievement of hoisting the prestigious Michael Jordan Trophy. Prior to the game, Paul even made an appearance on ESPN’s pregame show, taking the time to commend the “selfless” nature of his friend.
In the postgame press conference, Gilgeous-Alexander returned the appreciation, reflecting on the significant influence Paul has had on both his personal life and basketball journey. “Not only like a big brother, a mentor, but just like a friend,” he explained. Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized how Paul has been a pillar of support, always available to offer guidance in critical areas.
“I really lean on him for advice—and not only basketball advice,” he said. “Business advice. Taking care of your body advice. Handling a family when they don’t live with you. There are so many things that you deal with as an NBA player, especially of his caliber, that go under the radar. His guidance with that has been great. And like I said, beyond all the mentorship, just being there as a friend—he’s been special.”
The bond between these two players is a testament to the strength of mentorship in the NBA, reminding us that allies often extend beyond the court. As Gilgeous-Alexander continues to shine in his career, it’s clear that the support from veterans like Paul is invaluable, providing both insight and encouragement as he navigates the challenges of professional basketball.
