Despite a string of injuries and an offseason full of question marks, the New York Yankees are back in familiar territory – atop the American League East.
With a 34-20 record, the Yankees are putting together a strong case for another World Series push … But the front office isn’t standing pat.
According to USA TODAY, general manager Brian Cashman and the Bombers are actively exploring the trade market for reinforcements, particularly targeting a starting pitcher and a right-handed bat.
Ideally, the team would like that bat to come in the form of a third baseman, adding more stability to the infield.
The push for reinforcements comes despite the team’s success in recent weeks.
Injuries have tested the Yankees’ depth, with key players such as ace Gerrit Cole, slugger Giancarlo Stanton, versatile infielder Oswaldo Cabrera, and newcomer Jazz Chisholm all sidelined.
Still, the pinstripes hold a commanding 7-game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays entering Wednesday.
Aaron Judge continues to power New York’s offense, as he puts together yet another MVP-caliber season.
Batting .395 with 18 home runs, 47 RBIs and a 1.234 OPS, Judge has also stepped up as a vocal leader, recently offering support to struggling teammates and pushing the club through a critical early-season stretch.
Recent acquisitions have helped keep the Yankees in contention.
Former MVP Cody Bellinger has delivered timely hits, veteran first baseman Paul Goldschmidt is providing power and consistency, and Max Fried has been dominant on the mound in the absence of Cole.
Fried’s recent outing earned him comparisons to Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez – a sign of just how effective he’s been.
All in all, the Yankees look to have a solid chance at getting back to the Fall Classic – but they also know there are areas on the team that need bolstering.
What are your thoughts on the reports that Cashman will target both a right-handed bat and a starting pitcher at the trade deadline???
