MLB Rumors: Marlins Target Former Red Sox Speedster With Promising Potential

The Miami Marlins are actively seeking infield help for the upcoming season, and one player on their radar is free agent Adalberto Mondesi, as reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post:

“Marlins are still looking for a SS. Adalberto Mondesi is one consideration.”

Mondesi is no stranger to potential stardom, having been hailed as one of baseball’s top prospects before making his debut with the Royals. His early career showed flashes of brilliance, exemplified by his 14 home runs and 32 stolen bases in just 75 games during the 2018 season, highlighting an exceptional blend of power and speed – qualities that could greatly benefit the Marlins.

However, Mondesi’s career has been marred by injury setbacks. He has never played in over 102 games in a single season and has yet to amass more than 450 plate appearances in a year. While he reached a career-high 433 plate appearances in 2019, his recent years have seen him participate in just 109 games, with a combined 423 plate appearances over four seasons.

Throughout this offseason, the Marlins have refrained from making significant moves, opting for a more conservative approach. Their most recent addition was outfielder/first baseman Trey Mancini on a minor league deal.

Mancini’s journey in 2023 began with the Chicago Cubs, where he appeared in 79 games, batting .234 with four home runs and 38 RBIs. Eventually, the versatile player was released by the Cubs and went on to sign a minor league contract with the Cincinnati Reds.

Mancini’s presence offers the Marlins an intriguing offensive option off the bench, provided he secures a spot on the major league roster. Notably, he played a pivotal role in the Houston Astros’ World Series victory in 2022.
