For Philadelphia Phillies fans, the dream of bringing Mike Trout home has become an annual tradition.
Every trade deadline, speculation swirls about the future Hall of Famer potentially donning Phillies red. While nothing has ever materialized, the idea of the South Jersey native returning to his roots remains an enticing possibility.
Now, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic has reignited the conversation.
In a recent article exploring potential stars who could be available at the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline, Rosenthal named Trout among the most intriguing names – alongside Sandy Alcantara and Luis Robert Jr.
“If Trout stays healthy enough to at least force the issue for Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno, the deadline might be even more interesting than usual. Assuming Moreno, who operates according to his own whims, is willing to play along,” Rosenthal wrote.
Trout, who has spent his entire career with the Angels, has long been the face of the franchise. However, a potential move would signal a major shift for both the player and the organization.
The Phillies, on the other hand, have been actively searching for a right-handed outfield bat. While Trout isn’t quite the same dominant force he once was, he has still shown flashes of elite play when healthy.
Of course, a trade is far from straightforward. Rosenthal outlined several key obstacles…
-Health Concerns: Trout has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, raising concerns about his durability.
-No-Trade Clause: He holds full control over any potential deal, meaning he would have to approve a move to Philadelphia. (Which you’d think he’d be open to.)
-Massive Contract: The financial commitment is significant. Trout is owed $35.45 million per season, with a remaining $177.25 million due from 2026 to 2030.
Any team – including the Phillies – would need to absorb a major financial burden while likely parting with top prospects to satisfy the Angels’ demands.
Despite the risks, Philadelphia’s recent playoff disappointments could push them to consider a blockbuster move. Adding Trout could be the piece they need to get over the hump and contend for another World Series title.
Turning 34 in August, Trout would be a long-term commitment, but his deep Philadelphia ties – and well-documented love for the Eagles – would make him an instant fan favorite at Citizens Bank Park.
What are your thoughts on the Phillies potentially landing Trout later this season???
