The Texas Longhorns’ football program is poised for a new era in 2025 without star quarterback Quinn Ewers at the helm.
While the Longhorns navigated the 2024 season with Ewers under center, despite battling through multiple injuries, the polarizing quarterback is now off to the NFL.
Ewers, who recently recovered from a torn oblique injury sustained during the Michigan game earlier in the season, is now healthy enough to participate in the NFL Combine.
NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero confirmed the news, noting that the former Longhorn quarterback is back to full strength.
“Another quarterback I can tell you will throw [at the NFL Combine] is Texas’ Quinn Ewers,” Pelissero said. “I’m told that he is fully recovered now from a torn oblique that he played with basically this entire [college football season.]
“It happened during the Michigan game, it got worse over the course of time. But he is healthy now, his weight is up to about 215 pounds.”
Interestingly, Ewers has been working closely with renowned NFL coach Mike McCarthy in preparation for the combine.
Pelissero also shared details from his conversation with McCarthy, who praised Ewers’ work ethic and football acumen.
“Ewers has actually been working down in Texas with former Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, who I talked to on the phone yesterday” Pelissero continued.
“McCarthy said he’s just been really impressed with Quinn Ewers as a young man and the attentiveness that he has. They’ve been talking football for hours.”
McCarthy’s admiration for Ewers extends beyond his football skills.
He even expressed his excitement about working with the Texas quarterback, saying, “It’s been great. Honestly, I feel like a kid in a candy shop when talking football with him.”
As Ewers gears up for the NFL Combine, all eyes are on how his performance may impact his draft prospects.
Pelissero emphasized that the quarterback class is still wide open, especially behind top prospects like Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward, and the combine could be Ewers’ chance to elevate his stock.
“This is a wide open quarterback group, obviously beyond [Shedeur Sanders and Cam Ward.] This is an opportunity for Quinn Ewers to come out and maybe establish himself as QB3, if not QB2 or QB1,” Pelissero added.
“There’s a lot of things still to shake out through the course of this process.”
While Ewers has his share of critics, the fact of the matter is he’s been extremely underrated and underappreciated throughout the early draft evaluation process.
However, as Pelissero noted, he will have his chance to shine at the Combine. Don’t be surprised if he skyrockets up draft boards following this weekend.
What are your thoughts on Ewers as an NFL prospect? … Do you think McCarthy’s coaching and guidance will help him???
