According to reports, former NFL quarterback Michael Vick is in the running for the head coaching position at Norfolk State University.
Vick, a native of Virginia and a former college player at Virginia Tech, was contacted by Norfolk State regarding the open coaching spot.
While Vick has never held an official coaching position since retiring from professional football after the 2015 NFL season, he expressed readiness to step into the role if selected.
Since his retirement, Vick has worked as an NFL analyst for FOX Sports, beginning in 2017.
Vick’s career in football is highlighted by his remarkable college and professional accomplishments.
He was drafted first overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001, following two standout seasons as Virginia Tech’s starting quarterback.
One of Vick’s greatest NFL achievements was becoming the first quarterback in league history to rush for 1,000 yards in a single season.
This milestone has since been matched by other quarterbacks like Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields.
However, Vick’s legacy in the NFL is often overshadowed by his conviction in 2006 for involvement in an illegal dogfighting ring, which led to a 21-month prison sentence.
He returned to the NFL after serving his sentence and even earned the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in 2010 while playing for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Norfolk State recently parted ways with head coach Dawson Odums on November 26 following a 4–8 season.
Odums had been with the Spartans for four years and posted a record of 15–31.
The university is eager to return to winning form, and Vick could be the man to lead the team back to success.
