Tua Tagovailoa has been the starting quarterback for the Miami Dolphins, but after dealing with a series of concussions and mixed performances, it might be time for the franchise to consider a change. As the Dolphins look ahead to the 2025 NFL Draft, the opportunity to find a new signal-caller has presented itself.
In his five seasons with Miami, Tagovailoa has compiled impressive numbers, throwing for 15,760 yards and racking up 101 touchdowns, all while maintaining a solid 72.9% completion rate. However, the flip side reveals a less rosy picture — 45 interceptions and 113 sacks. His struggles were particularly pronounced in the team’s playoff outing against the Kansas City Chiefs, where he completed only 51.3% of his passes for 199 yards and a single touchdown. That performance raised eyebrows and highlighted the concerns about his ability to deliver under pressure.
Many view Tagovailoa as a game-managing quarterback rather than a game-changer. While he possesses the agility to maneuver within the pocket, he hasn’t consistently demonstrated the ability to break off big runs when plays start to unravel. Head coach Mike McDaniel’s offensive scheme has done well to mask some of Tagovailoa’s limitations, particularly with shorter throws that simplify his reads and create more space for receivers with designed routes. However, this approach tends to falter against tougher defenses, indicating that it might not be enough to propel the Dolphins to a championship.
Enter Jalen Milroe, the potential answer to the Dolphins’ quarterback dilemma emerging from the Alabama talent pipeline. Milroe has exhibited an advanced football IQ, effectively using pump fakes and eye movement to manipulate defenders, which has contributed to his impressive statistics of 2,834 passing yards and 16 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. What sets him apart, though, is his exceptional rushing ability — he rushed for 879 yards and added 20 touchdowns over 150 attempts. This dual-threat capability would add a dynamic element to the Miami offense, particularly in their use of run-pass options and play-action plays, making life difficult for opposing defenses.
Milroe not only has the ability to create opportunities on the ground, but he also excels through the air, showcasing the arm strength needed to throw accurately across the field. His anticipation skills enable him to lead receivers effectively and adjust to pressure situations, qualities that could significantly enhance Miami’s offensive efficiency.
While Milroe faced some adversity during the Senior Bowl, which may have impacted his draft stock, his upside remains significant. For the Dolphins, the key will be finding the right environment to help him flourish, much like what we’ve seen with recent rookie quarterbacks.
If Miami is serious about securing a franchise quarterback for the future, Jalen Milroe could very well be the candidate who offers the blend of skills and potential that Tagovailoa has not fully delivered. The upcoming draft may be the opportunity the Dolphins need to turn the page in their pursuit of gridiron greatness.
