Mets Agree To $10.5 Million Deal With Former Yankee Harrison Bader

Harrison Bader is making his return to New York, but this time he’ll be wearing the blue and orange of the Mets. The outfielder has signed a one-year, $10.5 million contract with the Mets, bringing his defensive prowess to their roster.

Bader, a 29-year-old Bronxville native, struggled with injuries during his time with the Yankees, dealing with plantar fasciitis, an oblique strain, and a hamstring strain. However, he’s known for his exceptional defensive skills in center field, earning him the Gold Glove award in 2021.

The addition of Bader could allow the Mets to move Brandon Nimmo to a corner outfield position when needed, optimizing their outfield alignment and bolstering their defense. This aligns with the Mets’ goal of improving their run prevention, as stated by general manager David Stearns.

Nimmo, who primarily played center field for the Mets last season, is open to adjusting his position to help the team win. This flexibility could see both Nimmo and Bader sharing time in center field, with Bader often facing left-handed pitchers due to his right-handed hitting ability.

Bader’s offensive performance in 2023 was inconsistent, but he excelled against left-handed pitchers, hitting .299 with a .936 OPS in 97 plate appearances. He showcased his power in the 2022 playoffs, hitting five home runs in nine games for the Yankees.

Despite a challenging 2023 season, Bader’s defensive skills remain highly regarded. His arrival adds depth to the Mets’ outfield, which includes Starling Marte, Tyrone Taylor, Jeff McNeil, and DJ Stewart. Taylor, acquired from the Brewers, is another strong defensive outfielder capable of playing all three positions.

This depth will provide options and support for Marte, who had a tough season in 2023 due to a recurring groin injury. The Mets’ commitment to improving their defense also extends to their infield, with the addition of veteran Joey Wendle.

Bader’s return to New York reunites him with former college teammate Pete Alonso, and they played together at the University of Florida from 2014-2015. Alonso expressed his excitement on Instagram, welcoming Bader back to the Mets.

With this signing, the Mets continue to strengthen their defensive lineup and add flexibility to their outfield rotation. Bader joins fellow former Yankee Luis Severino, who signed with the Mets earlier in the offseason, in bringing his talent and enthusiasm to the team. Bader expressed his deep appreciation for playing in his hometown during his time with the Yankees, making his return to New York a meaningful moment in his career.
