Mavericks Coach Arrested on Charges of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Darrell Armstrong was apprehended early Saturday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to Dallas police as reported by local media outlet WFAA.

The incident unfolded around 3:45 a.m. on Ross Avenue, where Armstrong, 56, reportedly engaged in a heated argument during which he allegedly threatened a woman with a firearm. Details on the woman’s identity have not been disclosed.

Confirmation from jail records indicates Armstrong’s arrest just prior to 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, with reports suggesting he posted bail set at $35,000.

In the aftermath of the unfortunate event, the Mavericks issued a statement to WFAA expressing awareness of the situation and refraining from further comment while the legal procedures unfold.

This recent legal entanglement comes on the heels of Armstrong’s previous run-in with the law in May 2023 when he faced charges of impaired driving and resisting arrest/escape from custody in Gastonia. Following that incident, he was released upon a $5,000 secured bond, also dealing with additional charges related to insurance, traffic violations, and alcohol consumption.

With a tenure of ten seasons as an assistant coach with the Mavericks starting in 2008, Armstrong brings a wealth of experience from his over a decade-long career in the NBA. With notable stops at Orlando, New Orleans, Indiana, New Jersey, and Dallas during his playing days, Armstrong’s achievements include earning the NBA’s Sixth Man Award and Most Improved Player Award in 1999, along with contributing to the Mavericks’ journey to the 2006 NBA Finals after being traded to Dallas from New Orleans in 2004.
