J.K. Dobbins has navigated a challenging journey since entering the NFL, enduring a series of injuries that have tested his resilience. However, when he was able to take the field, he certainly made his presence known within the Chargers’ offensive scheme last season. As he approaches the offseason with a new contract on the horizon, questions linger about his future.

Head Coach Jim Harbaugh’s commitment to a robust running game could lead the Chargers to evaluate their options critically, particularly concerning Dobbins’ durability. After all, with a reputation for prioritizing a solid ground attack, the Chargers might decide that letting Dobbins walk in free agency aligns with their long-term strategy. If that scenario unfolds, the New York Giants would be wise to consider bringing Dobbins on board.

Dobbins has struggled with health throughout his career, appearing in more than eight games only twice. The 2024 season saw him limited to just 13 contests, yet he still managed to compile impressive statistics with 905 rushing yards on an efficient 4.6 yards per carry. Despite his promising performance, his history of injuries raises legitimate concerns, and at just 26 years old, he could easily be looking at a crossroads.

Looking ahead, it wouldn’t be a surprise for the Chargers to opt for a healthier, younger running back from a deep 2025 draft class, making Dobbins a potential cap casualty. With a contract valued at a modest $1.6 million per year, it’s clear he’s been a bargain for the Chargers; however, his asking price may significantly increase in free agency.

Now, what about the Giants? Tyrone Tracy Jr. had an impressive rookie outing, finishing with 892 yards on 192 attempts, averaging a solid 4.4 yards per carry. Beyond his rushing ability, Tracy has translated well to the role of a receiving back, hauling in 38 catches for 284 yards. His versatility adds tremendous value to the Giants’ backfield and pairs well with Dobbins, creating a dynamic rushing duo that could elevate the offense.

In contrast, Devin Singletary has struggled, registering only 347 yards on 113 carries, with a disappointing 3.9 yards per carry. While the Giants have commitments to Singletary that may limit immediate options, they might still consider adjusting his depth-chart status as they refine their roster.

Looking ahead to the quarterback situation for the Giants remains uncertain, but one thing is clear—establishing a strong running game will undoubtedly be crucial for the team’s success in 2025. A partnership featuring Dobbins and Tracy could unlock new dimensions in their offense, setting the stage for a compelling season ahead.
