Houston Astros Steer Clear of Arbitration and Seal New Deals

In a proactive move, the Houston Astros have successfully reached contractual agreements with six of their arbitration-eligible players, as reported by The Athletic and KPRC in Houston.

Kyle Tucker, in particular, finalized an impressive one-year deal worth $12 million, signifying a significant raise compared to his $5 million earnings in 2023. Tucker’s achievements have been nothing short of remarkable, earning him the title of the Astros’ 2023 Player of the Year. His near-30 home run and 30 steal season underscore his prowess on the field.

While five players have inked deals, one notable absence remains—utility player Mauricio Dubón. The Astros faced a deadline early on Thursday to secure these agreements, with the possibility of arbitration figures being exchanged on Thursday evening if necessary.

Framber Valdez, another integral component of the Astros, agreed to a substantial $12.1 million deal. Valdez’s exceptional performance earned him recognition as the Astros’ Pitcher of the Year. With a 12-11 record in the previous season, he maintained a commendable 3.45 ERA, achieved a career-high 200 strikeouts, and secured his second consecutive All-Star selection. Notably, Valdez also achieved the rare feat of pitching a no-hitter.

Jose Urquidy clinched an impressive one-year deal valued at $3.75 million. Although injuries disrupted his previous season, this 28-year-old right-hander’s contributions in 2022 significantly aided the Astros in their World Series victory, with a notable 13-8 record and a 3.94 ERA.

Chas McCormick, a rising star and fan favorite, solidified his presence with a one-year deal worth $2.85 million. McCormick showcased his capabilities in the previous season, boasting a batting average of .273, an on-base percentage of .353, and a slugging percentage of .489. He set personal records with 22 home runs and 70 RBI, leaving an indelible mark on the Astros’ roster.

Luis Garcia, despite a season marred by Tommy John surgery, secured a contract worth $1.875 million for 2024. Garcia’s journey to recovery is eagerly anticipated, given his previous accomplishments, including a 15-8 record with a 3.72 ERA in 2022.

Bryan Abreu, a promising prospect, finalized his contract at $1.75 million. Abreu’s exceptional performance as one of the Astros’ top set-up men, highlighted by a 1.75 ERA and a career-high 72 games, positions him as a potential closer for the Astros’ future.

The Astros’ proactive approach in securing these crucial contracts underscores their commitment to building a competitive roster. With these talented players on board, the team is poised for another promising season, setting the stage for their continued success.
