Georgia’s Future QB Plans Come With An Alabama Twist

The Georgia Bulldogs are preparing for their College Football Playoff run, but questions about the team’s future at quarterback loom large.

While sophomore Gunner Stockton could potentially have a golden opportunity to prove he can be Carson Beck’s successor, Georgia isn’t ruling out the possibility of adding a transfer quarterback to bolster their roster going forward.

According to On3 Sports, Georgia is scheduled to host Alabama transfer quarterback Dylan Lonergan.

This follows earlier reports linking the Bulldogs to former Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza.

Lonergan, a redshirt freshman, has three years of eligibility remaining starting in 2025.

The former four-star recruit from Snellville, Georgia, has struggled to climb the depth chart at Alabama.

Behind Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, Lonergan appeared in only two games, completing five of six passes for 23 yards.

Before committing to Alabama in 2023, Lonergan received offers from multiple programs, including Georgia.

A two-sport standout in high school, Lonergan briefly played baseball for Alabama in 2023 but stepped away from the sport this year.

With Beck nearing the end of his college career, the Bulldogs are actively evaluating options for 2025 and beyond.

Stockton could cement himself as Georgia’s quarterback of the future during the upcoming playoff run.

Beck is expected to miss the Bulldogs’ next game due to an elbow injury sustained in their SEC Championship win over Texas, paving the way for Stockton to make his first career start.

Stockton, also a former four-star recruit, has spent two seasons waiting for his opportunity.

He played the entire second half against Texas, helping the Bulldogs secure their third SEC championship in four years.

Georgia’s success in the playoffs will heavily influence Stockton’s trajectory with the program.

A strong performance could solidify his role as the starter moving forward. Conversely, a poor showing might prompt Georgia to more aggressively pursue a transfer quarterback.

Regardless of how this season finishes for Georgia, head coach Kirby Smart and his staff will need to address quarterback depth heading into 2025.

Georgia’s immediate focus is on their semifinal matchup, where they will face the winner of the Indiana-Notre Dame game.

Of course it depends on the true severity of Beck’s injury – but do you think Stockton will prove in this next month that he is QB1 for 2025?

Or do you think Smart should take a very close look at Lonergan and others???
