The At-Bat That Defined a Season
It was the kind of at-bat that gets replayed on highlight reels for years. Bottom of the seventh inning, two runners on, Tennessee trailing 5-4 against No. 17 LSU with the three-game sweep and the undefeated season on the line.
Gabby Leach fell behind 0-2 immediately. She worked the count full. She fouled off the sixth pitch, staying alive. And then she crushed the seventh pitch — a no-doubt blast over the right field wall at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium for a walkoff three-run home run that gave Tennessee an 8-5 victory and completed the sweep.
The Lady Vols improved to 23-0 on the season and 3-0 in SEC play, tying the 2007 team for the second-best start in program history. The 2006 team’s 24-0 mark is now just one win away.
Comeback Queens — Again
For the second consecutive game, Tennessee fell behind 4-0 in the early innings. For the second consecutive game, they stormed back and won. That kind of resilience against a ranked SEC opponent does not happen by accident.
Emma Clarke ignited Sunday’s rally with a massive three-run homer that brought Tennessee back within striking distance. The Lady Vols chipped away, and when the moment arrived in the seventh, Leach delivered the knockout punch.
The series sweep capped a dominant weekend for Leach, who went 6-for-10 across the three games with three home runs and six RBI. Twin sister Alannah Leach also contributed a solo homer in Game 2, as the Leach sisters combined for four home runs in the series.
Series Results
Tennessee took control of the series from the opening game, when Sage Mardjetko threw a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win on Friday. Saturday’s Game 2 was a slugfest that saw Tennessee overcome a 4-0 deficit to win 11-6 behind Gabby Leach’s 4-for-4 performance. Sunday’s walkoff completed the sweep in the most dramatic fashion possible.
LSU drops to 17-7 overall and 0-3 in SEC play after being outscored 24-11 across the three games. Despite taking early leads in Games 2 and 3, the Tigers could not hold on against a Tennessee lineup that simply refuses to be counted out.
What’s Next
Tennessee now sits one win away from tying the 2006 program record of 24-0 for the best start in school history. The Lady Vols continue SEC play this week and will be heavily favored to keep the streak alive.
The bigger narrative is the collision course between the two remaining unbeatens in the SEC. Alabama is also 23-0 after sweeping Ole Miss this weekend. When these two programs eventually meet, it could be the game of the year. But first, Tennessee has history to make — one more win at a time.
