ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum is never one to hold back, and this week he didn’t disappoint.
Finebaum weighed in on an X post from Illinois head coach Bret Bielema, who had some sharp words for former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.
The post came in response to the ongoing cheating scandal that has cast a shadow over Michigan’s recent successes, including their 2023 national championship season.
Bielema reposted a quote from Harbaugh that read, “If you cheat to win, you’ve already lost.” Yet, Bielema wrote, “Really… Why did you leave? Was looking forward to playing but understand why you ran to the NFL. See you in the future and can’t wait.”
Finebaum quickly sided with Bielema, calling Harbaugh a “fraud” and criticizing the veteran coach, who has been highly successful at both the NFL and college football level.
“I’ve always liked Bret,” Finebaum said. “He was fun when we were together. But he is right. Harbaugh is just a disingenuous fraud about all the things he used to say. He didn’t want to face the music. By the way, Michigan didn’t really want him to stay.”
Harbaugh, who spent nine seasons coaching Michigan, led the Wolverines to a national title in 2023 after capping off a dominant undefeated season.
But his accomplishments were marred by major controversy.
Michigan was accused of sign-stealing, with staff member Connor Stalions allegedly orchestrating the scheme. Although Harbaugh has denied any knowledge of the cheating.
As the investigations into the matter continued, Harbaugh made the decision to leave Michigan for the NFL, accepting the head coaching position with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Harbaugh made his impact felt immediately as he led the Bolts to the postseason in his very first year at the helm. (Although what the hell happened in that playoff game against Houston?!)
Regardless, Harbaugh could end up facing further penalties if he ever decides to return to college football.
If Harbaugh returns to the college game before 2028, he would be suspended for violating recruiting rules related to impermissible contact with recruits and players during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The potential punishment could worsen depending on what becomes of the ongoing battle between Michigan and the NCAA.
There are many people, including Bielema and Finebaum, who want to see Harbaugh punished for his alleged role in the cheating scandal.
Having said that, it’s likely that Harbaugh never returns to college football. While the fangs are certainly out, there’s a strong chance that Big Jim will never have to face the music.
There’s also the chance that he was genuinely unaware that any cheating was taking place … (Right???)
What are your thoughts on the whole situation? … Was Harbaugh aware of what was allegedly happening and what type of punishment SHOULD he face???
