Football World Heartbroken For Kirk Herbstreit

All college football fans (and most NFL fans) are well aware of Kirk Herbstreit’s beloved dog, Ben.

While a very small group of fans grew sick with Herbie’s frequent references to Ben, the vast majority of fans enjoyed hearing about the beautiful golden retriever.

Unfortunately, Ben passed away today at the age of 10.

Herbstreit shared the heartbreaking news today on X.

Ben had been diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma in March. Herbie revealed the cancer had aggressively spread to Ben’s organs.

“This is really hard to write but so many of you have loved and cared about Ben that I wanted to let you know. We found out today the cancer had spread throughout Bens organs and there was nothing left we could do-we had to let him go.

“I’ve had dogs my whole life but Ben was 1 on 1. He was smart-loving-gentle-patient-inquisitive-and welcoming to all. Always a big smile and a soft tail wag. He and I could communicate..he and I understood each other and had each others backs.

“He was with me more than anyone at home and traveling with me for work. Such an easy going companion. Hard day-but he will live within all of us forever. God please bless his majestic soul and thank you for putting him in my life for the last 10 years-a true blessing.

“Love you Ben.”

Ben’s relationship with Herbstreit became known to fans in November 2021, when he made his first appearance on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay in Herbstreit’s hometown of Cincinnati.

From then on, Ben was often seen by Herbstreit’s side, bringing joy and comfort to the analyst during some of his family’s most challenging moments, including his 20-year-old son Zak’s hospitalization for a heart condition.

During their travels, Ben earned several affectionate nicknames, including “Wide Retriever” in Atlanta and “Treat Analyst” in Happy Valley, Pennsylvania.

His presence became a soothing force for Herbstreit, and his constant companionship was a source of comfort.

“We happily accommodate our lives around Ben and whatever it is he needs,” Herbstreit told The Athletic in December 2023. “I report to Ben, is kind of how it works. Everyone else reports to my wife and me, and we report to Ben.”

Earlier this week, Herbstreit updated followers about Ben’s deteriorating health.

He shared that Ben had lost his ability to walk and that he had been treated by a holistic doctor with a Vitamin C IV to ease his suffering.

The response from fans and followers was overwhelming, which Herbstreit deeply appreciated. “I’m so thankful for ALL the love so many have shown him over the last couple years,” he posted on Monday.

“One of the hardest things I’ve gone through in my life. Ben is my best friend and companion. I love him with all of my heart. If you’re a spiritual person, I’d love for you to pray for my boy.”

Many people can relate to what Herbie is going through right now. Losing a beloved pet is absolutely devastating, especially when such a close and special relationship is developed.

Herbstreit will be on the call for Amazon’s coverage of Bengals-Ravens tonight on Thursday Night Football.

RIP to Ben and all the best to Herbie and his family.
