Four months after his trade from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New York Jets, Haason Reddick has requested out.
The star pass rusher’s formal trade request marks a new chapter in his ongoing contract saga which has dragged on since his move to Gang Green.
The 29-year-old Reddick joined the Jets in April in exchange for a conditional third-round draft pick.
Despite seeking a pay increase from the Eagles before the deal, Reddick was unable to secure a new contract with the Jets, which led him to skip mandatory minicamp and training camp.
Jets General Manager Joe Douglas addressed the situation on Monday, stating, “We have informed Haason that we will not trade him. He is expected to be with his teammates, and he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report.
“Since the trade discussions in March, we have been clear and consistent. Our focus remains on the players we have as we prepare for the season.”
Reddick’s father, Raymond Matthew, previously remarked that his son “outperformed his contract” and sought fair market value.
(Don’t you always love those comments? With that logic, if Reddick “underperforms his contract,” he should give money back to the team, right?)
Reddick, who recorded 27 sacks in two seasons with the Eagles, is in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract signed in 2022.
Despite initially embracing his new team, Reddick has faced fines and lost bonuses due to his holdout, as the Jets hesitated to renegotiate his contract.
The situation places additional pressure on Jets management, particularly after losing key pass rusher Bryce Huff to free agency. Huff has since joined the Eagles, where he is expected to play a significant role in replacing Reddick.
Although the Jets have stated that they have no interest in trading Reddick, CBS Sports listed five teams as potential suitors: Arizona, Atlanta, Chicago, Tampa Bay, and the Los Angeles Rams.
What do you think ends up happening with Reddick?
It’s clearly become a staring contest between him and the Jets … Who is going to blink first???
