Dominican Prosecutors Present Wander Franco’s Case; Judge To Decide On Friday

Dominican Prosecutors Accuse Wander Franco of Exploitation and Money Laundering

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco faces serious accusations as Dominican prosecutors charge him with commercial sexual exploitation and money laundering, stemming from allegations of a relationship with a minor whose mother is also implicated.

Prosecutors are seeking an $86,000 bond for Franco, along with restrictions on his travel and house arrest. The money laundering charges are linked to alleged payments made by Franco to the minor’s mother.

Additionally, prosecutors have requested travel restrictions and house arrest for the minor’s mother. The Public Ministry has stated that these measures aim to ensure the integrity of the legal process.

Prosecutors have presented evidence to a judge, who will make a ruling after examining the collected materials and evidence from a lengthy investigation. The decision is expected on Friday in a Puerto Plata courtroom, where the alleged crimes took place.

The judge has several options, including granting Franco bail, temporary arrest, preventing him from leaving the Dominican Republic, or requiring periodic appearances throughout the investigation or trial.

The 22-year-old All-Star player remains in custody since his detention on Monday in Puerto Plata. His attorney, Teodosio Jáquez Encarnación, has refrained from commenting on the case.

Major League Baseball placed Franco on administrative leave in August under its joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy. The investigation’s conclusion and potential league discipline remain uncertain at this time.
