Does Latest Embarrassment Prove Dan Lanning’s In Trouble???

Less than a month after a splashy celebration in a swimming pool with Oregon coach Dan Lanning following his commitment to the Ducks, five-star 2026 EDGE Richard Wesley has reopened his recruitment.

Wesley, who announced his commitment to Oregon on May 10, surprised many by reopening his recruitment earlier this week.

The California prospect – ranked No. 2 EDGE and No. 14 overall nationally – will now continue his official visit schedule, including a planned trip to Eugene on June 6. He also has official visits scheduled with Texas, Ohio State, and Texas A&M throughout the summer.

His decision to decommit came just 17 days after his initial pledge and the viral video featuring the celebratory pool jump alongside Coach Lanning.

Needless to say, the turn of events has created an awkward moment for Oregon as the pool clip resurfaced and made the rounds (again) on social media…

Some of the comments were friendly to Lanning – Some were not…

“It’s time everyone stops with caring about the high school players who won’t even contribute for two years. It should be this big of a deal getting portal players who have proven what their worth actually is not against high school kids … gotta stop letting the 18 year old own you.”

“When you find out there is no other reason to go there except money which anyone else can offer as well.”

“Man, this recruiting world is crazy. The video was wild enough.. Y’all quit selling out coaches and players.”

“Clearly contract negotiations went south.”

“It’s gotta be so tiring to be a college coach these days.”

This isn’t the only decommitment Oregon has faced recently. Just Tuesday, four-star offensive tackle Alai Kalaniuvalu, part of the Class of 2025, flipped his commitment to BYU.

While decommitments can shake a program, recruits are free to recommit, as seen in recent cases. No. 1 quarterback Jared Curtis decommitted from Georgia before returning to the Bulldogs on May 5.

Similarly, last year, five-star edge rusher Nate Marshall decommitted from Michigan, committed to Auburn, then flipped back to the Wolverines.

As for Wesley, Texas, Texas A&M, and USC are considered some of the top contenders to land him. “I’m open to any school that really wants me,” Wesley told On3.

Wesley pointed out that the USC Trojans might have an advantage due to proximity. “They have a lot of knowledge of my position. They’re in LA. That’s home. That’s my hometown,” he said.

Despite his recent decommitment, Wesley is scheduled to visit Oregon again officially on June 6, leaving the door open for a possible return.

Taking everything into account, are these decommitments a sign that Dan Lanning is losing his touch at Oregon???
