Dodgers Trade Former First-Rounder Michael Busch to Cubs in Roster Space Move

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago Cubs have reached a trade agreement that not only helps the Dodgers free up some space on their 40-man roster but also provides the Cubs with valuable major-league depth. The deal, announced on Thursday, involves the Dodgers sending right-handed reliever Yency Almonte and infielder Michael Busch to the Cubs. In return, the Dodgers acquire left-handed pitching prospect Jackson Ferris and outfielder Zyhir Hope.

Almonte, a towering 6-foot-5 right-hander, had a mixed performance during his two seasons with the Dodgers. In 2022, he boasted an impressive 1.02 ERA and 0.79 WHIP, striking out 33 batters in 35 1/3 innings. However, in 2023, his numbers took a hit with a 5.06 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, along with 49 strikeouts in 48 innings. Control issues, particularly walks, were a concern last season. Despite this, his ground-ball pitching style could align well with the Cubs’ strong infield defense.

Michael Busch, heading to the Cubs, has demonstrated his hitting prowess in the Pacific League, posting an impressive .293/.385/.544 slash line with 48 home runs in 209 games. Despite a less productive stint in the majors last season, his potential as an above-average hitter remains. Busch’s strengths include ranking in the top 10 among qualified Triple-A hitters in chase rate and batted balls with exit velocities exceeding 95 mph. However, he faces challenges against left-handed pitchers and lacks standout defensive skills, making his role uncertain in the Cubs’ infield.

The Cubs may seek additional options for infield defense, considering Busch’s limitations. The Dodgers had experimented with Busch in various positions, but a true defensive home proved elusive.

In return, the Dodgers receive promising talents from the Cubs. Jackson Ferris, a 19-year-old lefty, was a second-round pick in 2022. During his time with Class A Myrtle Beach last season, he delivered a 3.38 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 77 strikeouts in 56 innings, showcasing a strong fastball-curve combo. Zyhir Hope, an 18-year-old drafted in the 11th round last year, quickly garnered attention in Rookie Ball, hitting .286/.419/.543 with three homers, nine RBI, eight runs, and three steals in 11 games.

This trade adds an interesting dynamic to both teams’ rosters, with each side acquiring players who bring a mix of potential and challenges to the table.
