Disappointment Over Kim Ng’s Exit: Former GM Jim Bowden Criticizes Marlins’

Former Miami Marlins general manager Kim Ng, the trailblazing first female GM in Major League Baseball history, bid farewell to the franchise in October following the Marlins’ wild-card run that ended with a sweep by the Phillies. The separation came swiftly, and on the “Foul Territory” podcast, former GM Jim Bowden, renowned for his executive roles with multiple MLB clubs, expressed his disappointment in the manner of Ng’s departure.

While acknowledging the Marlins’ smart move in hiring Peter Bendix to bolster player development and scouting, Bowden criticized how the team handled Ng’s exit. Despite Ng’s commendable performance, highlighted by successful moves like the Jesus Luzardo trade that propelled the organization into the playoffs, the owner informed her of hiring someone above her, disagreed with her philosophy, offered a minimal raise, leading to her departure.

Kim Ng took on the role of Marlins GM in 2020 under the leadership of Derek Jeter, the team’s former president of baseball operations. Ng played a pivotal role in acquiring Luis Arraez, a key contributor to the team’s postseason appearance, ending a drought since 2003. Making history at 54 as the first female general manager in the top four North American professional sports leagues, Ng’s potential to nurture young talent significantly contributed to the Marlins’ success, securing a place in the playoffs after a prolonged hiatus.
