Cubs Considered As Potential Destination For Gold Glove Winner After Turner’s Move To Blue Jays

The Chicago Cubs are gearing up for the upcoming MLB season and are looking to finalize some last-minute deals to bolster their roster. While their winter plans initially aimed at landing multiple star players, the offseason hasn’t unfolded exactly as they had hoped. However, the Cubs still have opportunities to make significant upgrades before the season begins.

The Cubs made notable moves during the offseason, securing Shota Imanaga and Hector Neris in free agency and acquiring star prospect Michael Busch and veteran reliever Yency Almonte through trades. Despite these acquisitions, rumors of a reunion with Cody Bellinger continue to circulate. Such a reunion would make sense in the current free agency landscape, but it appears that Chicago may not be willing to meet Bellinger’s asking price.

However, the Cubs have alternative plans and could pivot to another star player who is still available, particularly after one of their free agent targets, Justin Turner, agreed to a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. According to insider Jon Morosi, “Matt Chapman’s market clarifies further with Justin Turner going to the Blue Jays. The Cubs and Giants are among Chapman’s possible landing spots.” Chapman has been linked to the Cubs throughout the offseason.

Matt Chapman boasts an impressive track record, having won four Gold Glove awards, including one in 2023. He aligns perfectly with the Cubs’ desire for strong defensive play in the infield. Additionally, Chapman has shown his offensive prowess, with a career slash line of .240/.329/.461 and an OPS+ of 117. He has consistently hit 20 or more home runs in four out of his seven seasons and driven in 50 or more runs in five of those years.

Adding Matt Chapman to their roster would provide a significant defensive upgrade for the Cubs and grant new manager Craig Counsell an everyday third baseman. This would enable Christopher Morel to focus on his development in the designated hitter role while maintaining a strong defensive presence.

The potential acquisition of Matt Chapman presents an appealing opportunity for the Cubs, and it will ultimately depend on the aggressiveness of the team’s front office in pursuing this move.
