The Chicago Cubs are reportedly eager to trade Cody Bellinger, but the process has been far from straightforward.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the team’s intentions were evident at the recent General Managers’ meetings.
“The worst-kept secret at the GM meetings was the Cubs offering Bellinger to anyone and everyone,” Nightengale reported. “So far, no team has expressed strong interest.”
Bellinger, a former MVP and World Series champion, isn’t a struggling player.
Last season, he hit .266 with 18 home runs for the Cubs, following a 2023 campaign that featured 26 homers.
However, his performance isn’t enough to outweigh the financial concerns tied to his current contract.
“Come on,” a GM told Nightengale, “who’s going to touch that contract? The risk is just too great for the production.”
Bellinger has two years and $52.5 million remaining on his deal, a commitment that might dissuade teams aiming to bolster their rosters for a championship push.
While it isn’t a long-term obligation, the financial strain could limit flexibility for any interested suitors.
The Cubs’ ability – or inability – to move Bellinger could shape the rest of their offseason.
Nightengale noted that Chicago is unlikely to pursue marquee free agents like Juan Soto or Max Fried unless they offload the veteran outfielder/first baseman.
For now, the team appears focused on mid-tier free agents, leaving high-profile moves to other clubs.
Several teams have been speculated as possible landing spots for Bellinger, although no concrete interest has emerged.
The New York Yankees have long been linked to Bellinger, but their focus on retaining superstar Juan Soto may complicate matters.
If Soto stays in the Bronx, the Yankees might be reluctant to add Bellinger’s contract.
New York also needs a first baseman, a position where Bellinger could fit, but the financial implications remain a question.
The San Francisco Giants are another potential destination.
The Giants’ recent mediocrity and inability to land big-name stars might prompt them to make a move, particularly as fan patience wears thin.
Meanwhile, the Los Angeles Dodgers, fresh off a championship season, could explore Bellinger as a backup plan if they fail to acquire Soto.
With the financial resources to absorb his contract, the Dodgers might be open to bringing back Bellinger as a short-term solution to bolster their roster.
The Cubs face a pivotal decision as they navigate trade talks.
Bellinger’s contract presents significant challenges, but finding a trade partner could be essential for the team’s broader plans this offseason.
Whether they land a deal or not, Chicago’s path forward may hinge on resolving the Bellinger issue.
What are your thoughts on Bellinger as a player? … Will the Cubs find a team to take him off their hands???
