Connor Bedard Makes Announcement About Staying in Chicago

Connor Bedard took to the podium this Thursday to set the record straight amidst swirling rumors about his happiness with the Chicago Blackhawks. In his candid remarks during the team’s final media session of the season, he emphasized his appreciation for both the city and the fans.

“I’m a pretty mild-mannered guy,” Bedard said, reflecting on how observers might misconstrue his demeanor during games. “If I looked a little sad on the bench or something, maybe people can take it out of context. I’ve said it so many times, I love being here and the city, the people.”

It’s no secret that being the No. 1 overall draft pick doesn’t guarantee immediate success. “If you get the first overall pick, you’re probably not winning the Cup the next two years,” Bedard acknowledged. Yet he remains optimistic about the future, noting the importance of undergoing a learning process as the team grows. “When you lose, it makes winning a lot sweeter once you get there. So, we’re excited for that.”

Bedard had an impressive rookie season, leading the Blackhawks with 67 points from 23 goals and 44 assists. After a successful preceding year where he netted 61 points and claimed the Calder Trophy, the pressure was on for the 19-year-old. However, not everything was smooth sailing—he faced his challenges, whether it was navigating personal scoring slumps or dealing with the team’s overall struggles. The Blackhawks, finishing last in the Central Division for the second straight season, underwent a coaching shake-up, with Luke Richardson being replaced by Anders Sorensen in December.

“Early in the year, when you’re losing, guys are frustrated,” he shared, highlighting the team’s competitive nature. Despite the challenges, Bedard emphasized the enjoyment he finds in the game. “I’m always having fun at the rink and enjoying the game. I think things can maybe get taken out of context. We’re always happy to be here… especially at the end of the year and how many guys made their debuts or came up after they were in Rockford for a bit.”

There are indeed reasons for optimism in the Windy City. Young talents like Frank Nazar, Oliver Moore, Sam Rinzel, and Artyom Levshunov are starting to shine, indicating a promising future for the franchise. Levshunov, specifically, made waves after being selected second overall in the recent NHL Draft, notching six assists in his initial 18 games.

The Blackhawks ended their season strong, posting a record of 4-2-2 in April, with notable road victories against both the Montreal Canadiens and the Ottawa Senators. Bedard couldn’t help but express his excitement, saying, “It was great to see a lot of guys’ growth and see what the future can hold. It was a lot of fun to get to play with these guys… and keep improving.”

Looking ahead, Bedard is set to become a restricted free agent this summer, with the possibility of signing a new contract with the Hawks as early as July 1. He recently wrapped up the second year of a three-year, $2.85 million entry-level contract. General Manager Kyle Davidson spoke positively of Bedard’s development, pointing out areas for growth that would allow him to step into more critical roles on the ice. “Again, know he’s 19, he’s got room and areas to grow in. I believe he truly understands that; he’s excited to attack that,” Davidson commented.

As for international play, Bedard is still undecided about representing Canada in the IIHF World Championship set for May 9-25 in Sweden and Denmark, but he’s keeping fans guessing about his plans. “I think that’s something that will come out pretty soon,” he noted.

Whether he competes or takes a hiatus, the young star relishes the opportunity to spend his summer training back home in North Vancouver. With a focus on improving his speed and acceleration, Bedard is clearly keen on gaining an edge for next season.

All things considered, the Blackhawks are on a promising trajectory, and Bedard is thrilled to be part of it. “Even before I got drafted, I was embraced as one of (Chicago’s) own, so it’s a special sports town,” he stated. “Anything can get said. I don’t really look at that, don’t really see a lot of that unless someone shows me. But I just think people who know me know I love to be here and really trust the direction we’re going.” The future is bright for Bedard and the Blackhawks, and fans can be sure he will continue to make an impact on and off the ice.
