Colin Cowherd stirred up some conversation recently by floating an intriguing idea regarding Nick Saban’s future in football – specifically, with the Dallas Cowboys. While some listeners may take Cowherd’s assertions with a grain of salt, he claims to be “convinced” that the legendary college football coach will make a return to the NFL and assume the role of head coach for America’s Team, should things take a turn for the worse under current head coach Brian Schottenheimer.

During a recent episode of The Herd, Cowherd expressed his belief with the kind of confidence that typically draws attention. He mentioned that even NFL insider Albert Breer finds the prospect of Saban coaching the Cowboys within the realm of possibility. It’s a bold prediction, to say the least, but it hasn’t found much favor among fans.

Many fans were quick to dismiss the notion, pointing out the challenges that might arise from such a partnership. Notable among the objections is the belief that Saban wouldn’t be able to handle the infamous meddling nature of Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. Comments like, “C’mon – Saban couldn’t and wouldn’t tolerate the Jones boys meddling,” highlight the skepticism surrounding the idea.

Furthermore, there’s the overarching narrative that Saban has already attempted the NFL journey and chose to step away after a short tenure with the Miami Dolphins. His two years in Miami yielded a 15-17 record, and after a disappointing second season, he transitioned to Alabama, where he ascended to legendary status in college football. The lack of desire for the stress and chaos of NFL coaching seems to resonate with many as a significant barrier to a return.

Fans have also pointed out that while Cowherd has made some bold claims in the past – like his suggestion regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers trading key players for a college star – those past predictions tend to color the perceived credibility of his current assertions.

While it’s tempting to think about the possibilities of Saban attempting to replicate the success of legendary coaches like Jimmy Johnson or Pete Carroll by winning both a national title and a Super Bowl, the reality is a different matter. With seven national championships already under his belt, Saban is likely more concerned about preserving his legacy than risking it for an uphill battle in the NFL.

In sum, Cowherd’s idea may be more fanciful than feasible. As intriguing as it sounds, it appears that the combination of Saban’s history, his established success in college football, and the frustrations that could arise with the Cowboys make this potential pairing unlikely to materialize. For now, the football world should probably take this speculation with a hefty dose of skepticism.
