The Atlanta Braves are clearly looking for a spark—a much-needed reset—as they hit the road following a disappointing loss to the Diamondbacks. After a stretch of underwhelming performances, the Braves took decisive action by promoting veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel while designating Scott Blewett for assignment, signaling they believe changes are essential.

When a player is designated for assignment (DFA), he hits the waiver wire. If no team claims him within the league’s 30 clubs, he has the option to accept a minor league assignment or explore free agency. In Blewett’s case, the pitching-needy Baltimore Orioles took notice and claimed him. Atlanta has now traded him to Baltimore for cash considerations, further bolstering their roster adjustments.

As the Braves usher in Kimbrel and also welcomed left-hander Dylan Dodd, they placed right-hander Daysbel Hernández on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. This move demonstrates Atlanta’s willingness to shake things up, aiming for the right mix in their bullpen.

Blewett’s tenure with the Braves may end on a bittersweet note. Ironically, his journey actually began with the Orioles this season after they claimed him off waivers from the Twins. Although his earlier stint in Baltimore was brief, the O’s clearly saw potential in him, making it full circle as they re-acquire the right-hander.

While it would have been beneficial for Blewett to stay in the minor leagues to work through his struggles, the reality is that the path to playing time in Atlanta had become virtually nonexistent. His recent outings left a mark, notably the struggles he faced against the Diamondbacks, which could linger in the minds of the coaching staff and fans alike.

Ultimately, the Braves were not positioned to hold onto him tightly, and trading Blewett provides them with some financial relief while simultaneously clearing a roster spot—crucial in their current situation. With Kimbrel and Dodd joining the mix, the Braves are looking to reinvigorate their bullpen. It’s a fresh chapter that they hope will translate into more consistent and effective performances on the mound as they push forward in the season.
