North Carolina football is looking to gain momentum on the recruiting trail under new head coach Bill Belichick, and the legendary coach has his eyes on a towering quarterback prospect.
Three-star quarterback Travis Burgess of Grayson High School in Loganville, Georgia, revealed Saturday that Belichick visited him.
The 6-foot-5 signal-caller, who has drawn significant interest from Auburn, among others, took to X to share his excitement after meeting the eight-time Super Bowl champion.
Burgess later made his way to Chapel Hill as the Tar Heels continued their first spring practices under Belichick.
With nearly 25 scholarship offers to his name, the strong-armed quarterback has become a key target for UNC’s 2026 recruiting class.
Last season, Burgess threw for 2,225 yards, racking up 23 touchdowns with just four interceptions while also adding four rushing scores.
His visit to North Carolina has only intensified speculation about where he’ll land as Belichick works to reshape the Tar Heels’ roster.
Belichick’s presence on the recruiting trail has already sparked intrigue.
While UNC’s 2026 recruiting class currently ranks No. 23 overall, per 247Sports, Auburn – the perceived front-runner for Burgess – sits at No. 16.
However, North Carolina holds a clear edge over another interested team – Duke – which ranks No. 48 and has only three verbal commitments for the cycle.
UNC has already made some noise in March, flipping longtime Texas A&M commit Trashawn Ruffin on St. Patrick’s Day.
The in-state defensive lineman became the highest-ranked pledge of the Belichick era. The Tar Heels also landed three-star defensive lineman David Jackson from Olney, Maryland, on March 9, bringing their total to nine verbal commitments.
North Carolina may not be done yet.
Former Alabama commit Jamarrion Gordon placed UNC on his short list Monday, signaling another potential high-profile addition to the Tar Heels’ recruiting efforts.
With spring practices in full swing, Belichick has the chance to make a major impact on the recruiting trail – starting with Burgess and the battle against Auburn and other SEC powers.
What are your thoughts on Belichick’s pursuit of Burgess? … Will the legendary coach prove to be a thorn in the side of major college programs going forward???
