Legendary Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton found herself in some troubling legal waters recently, as she was charged with driving under the influence in West Virginia earlier this month. According to records filed at the Magistrate Court of Marion County, the incident leading to her arrest took place on May 17. As of now, details surrounding the events prior to her arrest remain unclear.

Authorities, including the Fairmont Police Department and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, have not provided additional comments on the situation at this time. It’s been reported that Retton, 57, has posted a $1,500 bond, allowing her release pending further proceedings.

Retton’s place in sports history is well established. In 1984, she became the first American woman to win an Olympic individual all-around gold medal, narrowly defeating Romania’s Ecaterina Szabo during a thrilling competition at the Summer Games in Los Angeles. This monumental achievement not only solidified her status as a sports icon but also made her the first female athlete to grace the cover of a Wheaties box, further embedding her name in American sports culture.

The past year has been particularly challenging for Retton. She bravely shared her harrowing experience battling a severe case of pneumonia, describing a period in which she felt she was “staring down death” while in intensive care in 2023. Post-recovery, she has spoken candidly about the ongoing health complications she faces, including the use of a nasal oxygen tube to assist her breathing. Medical professionals have indicated that they are still uncertain about the specific illness affecting her lung health, labeling it a rare form of pneumonia.

Mary Lou Retton’s journey is a testament to resilience, both in the athletic arena and in her personal life, as she navigates through health challenges while also facing legal issues. The upcoming days will certainly reveal more as this story continues to unfold, but there’s no denying the impact she has made in the world of gymnastics and beyond.
