In a recent interview with Dan Patrick, Paul Finebaum addressed the ongoing discussion about how Michigan’s sign-stealing scandal is being covered by different media outlets. Notably, Finebaum pointed out what he sees as a contrast in coverage between ESPN and Fox.
Finebaum emphasized that at ESPN, no one is dictating what the pundits should say about the Michigan situation. However, he raised questions about whether the same can be said for Fox employees, suggesting that there might be some direction influencing their commentary.
During the interview, Finebaum expressed amusement at the Fox show on Saturdays, particularly highlighting Urban Meyer’s commentary in support of Michigan. He found it noteworthy that Meyer, of all people, was endorsing the Wolverines.
In discussing the situation, Finebaum mentioned Desmond Howard, an ESPN analyst and Michigan alum, who claimed that the Big Ten was out to get Jim Harbaugh “by any means necessary.” Finebaum acknowledged Howard as a “fine teammate” to avoid any potential conflicts.
While Fox analysts have generally taken a more reserved stance on the matter, Finebaum has consistently criticized Michigan, going as far as likening Harbaugh to Darth Vader and describing him as a “cartoon character” playing the victim card.
Finebaum also shared his perspective on the reaction from Michigan fans, noting that it has bothered him the most in the context of the sign-stealing scandal. Additionally, he declared that he would “refuse” to recognize Michigan as national champions if they were to win the College Football Playoff.
