Tragic news has struck the Baltimore Orioles organization with the untimely passing of 19-year-old minor league infielder Luis Guevara, who lost his life in a jet ski accident in Lido Key, Florida. The Orioles confirmed this devastating information in a statement late Tuesday, expressing profound sorrow over the loss of a young talent who was just beginning to carve out his path in professional baseball.
The unfortunate incident involved a collision between two jet skis, which left all four individuals on board in the water. Tragically, Guevara succumbed to his injuries after being transported to a hospital, underscoring the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of such recreational activities.
“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing,” said Mike Elias, the Orioles’ executive vice president and general manager. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates, and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time.”
Guevara joined the Orioles as an international free agent from Venezuela in January 2023, showcasing promise as he played various infield positions—shortstop, third base, and second base—while progressing through the team’s farm system. He began his career in the Dominican Summer League, where he spent two seasons honing his skills with the Orioles Orange.
By the time he transitioned to the United States, Guevara was making an impact in the Double-A Chesapeake BaySox of the Eastern League before competing with the Delmarva Shorebirds in the Single-A Carolina League and the Orioles’ Florida Complex League team. In 114 career minor league games across four teams, he left a mark with a solid .281 batting average, driving in 49 runs and stealing 41 bases—a testament to both his offensive skills and his speed on the base paths.
As the baseball community mourns this tragic loss, Guevara’s impact on and off the field will not be forgotten. He embodied the spirit of determination and passion that defines young athletes striving for greatness in the sport they love.
