The Vancouver Canucks are facing an interesting crossroads with their star forward, Elias Pettersson. One year into his massive eight-year, $92.8 million contract, Pettersson’s performance during the 2024–25 season fell short of expectations. His tally of just 15 goals and 45 points over 64 games was a far cry from the jaw-dropping 100-plus points he delivered a couple of seasons ago.

Rumors of a rift between Pettersson and former teammate J.T. Miller have swirled, alongside injuries that have taken a toll on Pettersson’s output this season. These factors led to speculation that the Canucks might consider trading their talented forward amid the drama and reduced production.

According to NHL insider Pierre LeBrun from The Athletic, however, it seems Vancouver is not ready to part ways with Pettersson just yet. LeBrun noted, “Never say never, but all signs point to the Canucks keeping Elias Pettersson, whose full no-move clause kicks in July 1.” This indicates a belief within the organization that Pettersson remains a key asset.

Despite the disparity between his production and salary, Vancouver’s commitment appears firm. Although other teams have shown interest—tempted by a thin free-agent market—the Canucks seem intent on sticking with their star, hoping he regains his top-tier form. Pettersson’s full no-trade clause, which becomes active this summer, further solidifies his position with the team as they bank on a resurgence.

Newly appointed head coach Adam Foote shared his optimism for Pettersson’s potential during a conversation on Sportsnet’s Halford and Brough in the Morning. Foote brushed aside past issues, emphasizing the importance of a fresh start for Pettersson. “We’re going to turn the page on what happened last year,” Foote explained. “I think [Pettersson] needs a fresh start, he needs to feel that support. I want to help him figure out how to be a true pro… I want this group to hold each other accountable.”

Foote is confident that Pettersson can bounce back to his previous stellar form, reminiscent of the 2022-23 season where he dazzled with 102 points in 80 games. As the Canucks look to the future, the hope is that with some renewed support and a clean slate, Pettersson will once again become a driving force on the ice.
