In an unexpected turn of events, the Los Angeles Dodgers had to adjust their lineup just before their season opener against the Chicago Cubs, as first baseman Freddie Freeman was scratched due to discomfort in his left rib. Initially slated to bat third and take his position at first base, Freeman’s absence was a disappointing development for the Dodgers, especially given his strong performance last season, where he posted a .282 batting average alongside 22 home runs and 89 RBIs.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts addressed the situation, noting that Freeman is dealing with discomfort in the same rib area that caused him issues during last year’s postseason. However, Roberts expressed optimism about the severity of the situation, saying, “Not as severe. I thought we made the right decision not playing him tonight. We’ll see how he comes in tomorrow. So right now, I’m not too concerned.”

With Freeman out, the Dodgers quickly shuffled their lineup, moving Kiké Hernández to first base and slotting Michael Conforto in left field. This flexibility is crucial, especially in a condensed season start like the one against the Cubs in Japan.

To add to the Dodgers’ challenges, star shortstop Mookie Betts was also unavailable due to an illness and has returned to Los Angeles for recovery. “It just made the most sense for him to get back to a regular routine,” Roberts explained. “That’s kind of where we’re at and we all support it.”

As the Dodgers embark on this two-game series in Japan, the hope is that both Freeman and Betts will return swiftly to full strength, allowing them to field their best lineup moving forward. The team is certainly keen to keep their momentum going after last season’s successes, and solid health will be a critical factor in their pursuit of a championship this year.
