Major Changes Announced For Ultra-Popular NFL Program … Are These For The Better Or Worse??

After months of speculation and anticipation, NFL Network has officially announced the relaunch of their popular “Good Morning Football” program.

GMFB, alongside a new syndicated show, “Good Morning Football: Overtime,” are set to premiere on July 29. The refreshed cast and schedule have also been revealed.

Returning hosts Jamie Erdahl, who joined in 2022, and original members Kyle Brandt and Peter Schrager, will be joined by two new faces: former NFL defensive end Akbar Gbajabiamila and reporter Sherree Burruss.

Gbajabiamila, who worked at NFL Network from 2012 to 2019 and currently hosts “American Ninja Warrior” on NBC, is making a comeback to the network after a stint on CBS’ “The Talk.”

Burruss, relocating from Washington, D.C., joined NFL Network in February following her tenure at CBS Sports.

The show’s transition from New York to Los Angeles has been a key point of discussion. Erdahl confirmed her move early on, while popular co-host Jason McCourty chose to leave the show rather than relocate.

Brandt and Schrager will split their time between Los Angeles and New York. The network has emphasized that this bi-coastal setup will allow comprehensive coverage of the league.

The primary GMFB show will air weekdays from 8-10am EST on NFL Network, with GMFB: Overtime following from 10am-noon.

Notably, GMFB: Overtime will also stream for free on The Roku Channel starting July 29 and will begin airing in syndication on local broadcast stations on September 2.

Angela Ellis, NFL Media vice president of original content and entertainment, expressed excitement about Gbajabiamila’s return, noting his experience in both sports and entertainment.

Ellis also highlighted the new state-of-the-art facilities and expanded resources available for the show’s talent.

“Not only are we bringing back a show that so many fans have woken up to and loved for years, we are giving it a state-of-the-art new home with even more resources and space for our talent to showcase their signature segments and fun takes on the game of football,” Ellis said in a statement.

David Jurenka, senior vice president and general manager of NFL Media in Los Angeles, lauded the opportunity to expand the GMFB brand to new audiences.

“With ‘GMFB: Overtime,’ we have an incredible opportunity to introduce this unique and beloved brand to an entirely new audience in all 30 NFL markets and beyond,” he said.

Meanwhile Joe Franzetta of Roku Media and Flory Bramnick of Sony Pictures Television echoed enthusiasm for their respective partnerships.

“It is an honor to be the launch partner for ‘GMFB: Overtime,’ the perfect addition to our Roku Sports offering,” Franzetta said.

“This is an exciting milestone in our evolving partnership with the NFL. We look forward to working with both Sony Pictures Television and the NFL to bring millions of fans free access to the latest in the NFL five days a week.”

“Partnering with the NFL is a dream come true,” Bramnick added. “Opportunities like ‘GMFB: Overtime’ are special and rare, and I’m grateful to the NFL for entrusting us with this jewel.

“We are giving fans multiple ways to enjoy ‘GMFB: Overtime’ with every viewership opportunity available, from ‘rabbit ears’ to streaming.

“We’re excited for the show’s launch on Roku on July 29 and later this fall on local TV stations on Sept. 2.”

The production of both GMFB and GMFB: Overtime will be overseen by NFL Media, with Bill Hentschel and Becky Orenstein as showrunners and Michael Davies of Embassy Row serving as executive producer.

U.S. distribution will be managed by Sony Pictures Television, with CBS Media Ventures handling national ad sales.
