Texas Tech's NiJaree Canady receives her golden ticket from AUSL commissioner Kim Ng, Friday, March 27, 2026, at Tracy Sellers Field.

While the softball world was watching Oklahoma set a freshman home run record in Austin and Stanford end Florida State’s win streak in Palo Alto, No. 1 Texas Tech was going about its business in Salt Lake City. The Red Raiders opened their road series at Utah on Friday with a 10-2 win, with NiJaree Canady improving to 16-2 on the season and adding to her growing legacy off the field as well.

Canady’s Friday Performance

Canady struck out seven in 5.2 innings of work against Utah, allowing just two runs. She also contributed at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles and an RBI — a reminder that her value to Texas Tech extends well beyond the circle. The Red Raiders won 10-2 and continued to make the case that they are the most complete program in the country.

Canady’s season line now sits at 16-2. She reached 1,000 career strikeouts earlier this month, becoming the 102nd pitcher in NCAA Division I history to hit that mark. Her ERA has remained well below 2.00 throughout the season. The argument for her as the best pitcher in college softball has no credible counterpoint.

The AUSL Golden Ticket

This week, the Athletes Unlimited Softball League (AUSL) surprised Canady with the first Golden Ticket of the 2026 draft season. The honor, presented to her by AUSL commissioner Kim Ng and Patrick Mahomes, is the league’s way of designating its most coveted prospect ahead of the professional draft. It is the highest individual honor the AUSL bestows on a college player.

The recognition reflects what the professional softball world has understood for two years: Canady is a generational talent. She holds three career no-hitters at the Division I level, sits atop virtually every pitching category in the Big 12, and does it all with an offensive presence that most pitchers cannot match. The Golden Ticket is an acknowledgment that when the AUSL draft happens, Texas Tech’s ace will be the centerpiece.

The Bigger Picture for Texas Tech

Texas Tech held the No. 1 ranking entering the weekend and appears poised to remain in the top two when the NFCA Week 10 poll drops Tuesday. Oklahoma’s Red River Rivalry series win is a strong case for a rise to No. 1, but TTech’s continued dominance — winning on the road at Utah, protecting the conference lead — cannot be easily dismissed.

The Red Raiders have been at or near the top of the national rankings for most of the 2026 season. They have not shown a weakness in their schedule that teams can target. As the field narrows toward the WCWS, Texas Tech remains the team everyone has to beat.

What’s Next

Texas Tech finishes its road series at Utah with Games 2 and 3, then returns home for the final stretch of Big 12 conference play. Canady will continue to accumulate strikeouts and wins at a historic pace. Whether she chases additional records or simply keeps Texas Tech atop the national standings, the Red Raiders’ path to Stillwater runs through her arm. The Golden Ticket is just the latest reminder that the world outside Lubbock is paying attention.
