The New York Yankees made a significant addition to their pitching staff moments ago when they reached an agreement with All-Star left-hander Max Fried on a lucrative eight-year, $218 million contract.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan was the first to break the news of the high-profile signing.
As Passan pointed out, Fried’s deal is the largest for a left-handed pitcher in MLB history.
The 30-year-old Fried emerged as one of the premier pitchers on this year’s free agent market.
Last season, he posted an 11-10 record with a 3.25 ERA over 29 starts for the Atlanta Braves.
Over his career, Fried has built an impressive track record, amassing a 73-36 record with a 3.07 ERA in 168 games (151 starts) since his debut with Atlanta in 2017.
Widely regarded as one of the top left-handers in baseball, Fried also attracted interest from other teams, including the Boston Red Sox, before ultimately deciding to join the Yankees.
The negotiations reportedly unfolded during this week’s Winter Meetings, underscoring the intense competition for his services.
A former first-round pick, Fried was selected seventh overall in the 2012 MLB Draft.
Over the years, he has become known for his consistent performance and ability to deliver in high-pressure situations, qualities the Yankees will undoubtedly value as they aim to strengthen their World Series aspirations.
The addition of Fried is expected to provide a significant boost to the Yankees’ rotation, solidifying their standing as a legitimate World Series contender.
What are your thoughts on the signing?
While more moves will clearly be made, what are your thoughts on both New York teams as we currently stand?
Speaking of the Mets, where do you think Pete Alonso will end up? … Will it possibly be in the Bronx???
