With Tensions Rising, Cowboys Make Another Surprising Roster Move

In a notable roster move, the Dallas Cowboys announced the release of veteran cornerback Gareon Conley.

Conley, a former first-round NFL Draft pick and standout at Ohio State, had signed with the Cowboys as a free agent earlier this year.

There were high hopes that Conley could be a difference maker on the field for the Boys.

Conley, 29, entered the league in 2017 when he was drafted by the then-Oakland Raiders.

He played with the Raiders until 2019 before being traded to the Houston Texans, where he spent a couple of seasons.

Conley’s journey brought him to Dallas in 2024, but his tenure with the Cowboys was short-lived.

Reports indicate that Conley informed the Cowboys of his decision to retire, prompting his release from the team.

“The Dallas Cowboys have released cornerback Gareon Conley. The former first-round pick was signed on June 18 after a standout season in the UFL with the DC Defenders. This comes after the Cowboys made two additions at the receiver position on Saturday,” reported Nick Harris of DallasCowboys.com

Sure enough, Conley had communicated his retirement plans to the team, leading to the roster move.

The Cowboys, who are coming off a Wild Card round loss to the Green Bay Packers, are now focused on their upcoming season opener against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Sept. 8.
