When you speak into a microphone as often as FS1’s Colin Cowherd does, you’re bound to spit out a bad take or two.
However, we have once again been reminded of one take in particular that Cowherd made six years ago – and to this very day, it remains in a league of its own as the single-worst take in sports history.
Back in 2018, Cowherd knighted BEN SIMMONS as the new face of the NBA and basically projected him to become one of the greatest basketball players in history.
The take ages worse and worse with each and every passing day, which is why the clip resurfaces so often and never fails to go viral again and again.
“You know I love LeBron … I’ve talked about him incessantly for a decade. I still think he is remarkable. But for the first time in 10 to 12 years, I look at the NBA – which I’ve watched for four decades – and I say this now with Ben Simmons: ‘Hey, LeBron, we’re good, bro. You can go. You don’t have to. You can hang around. Still great. But you can go. We’re all good here,” Cowherd inexplicably said.
“I never bought into it with Blake Griffin. Despite what he did last night, I’ve never bought into it with Anthony Davis. Russell Westbrook doesn’t drive me to a TV to that level – certainly didn’t when he broke into the league.
“But when I watch Ben Simmons play – and again, I don’t know if the Sixers are special – it is just a gut feeling … That is something between LeBron and Magic.”
In fairness to Cowherd, he was hardly the only person excited about Simmons’ potential back in those days.
However, as time went on, Simmons proved to be the least-competitive and least-driven athlete in sports history.
There’s no need to rehash the obvious with Simmons. We all know how his story has played out.
All of this is why it’s so amazing to look back on what some people were saying about him during his early days with the 76ers.
Needless to say, Cowherd’s take once again went viral on social media – and as always, the reaction was hilarious…
