This Under The Radar Team Could Make CFB Playoff With 3 Losses

After celebrating a national championship in 2023, the Michigan Wolverines are confronting a challenging new chapter as they head into the 2024 college football season.

Sherrone Moore steps into the role of head coach, succeeding Jim Harbaugh.

Moore’s first full season is set against a grueling schedule that includes high-profile matchups against Texas, USC, Washington, Oregon, and Ohio State.

ESPN’s Paul Finebaum weighed in on Michigan’s prospects, especially with the introduction of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff format.

Finebaum believes this new structure could benefit the Wolverines more than most, allowing them to withstand a few losses and still secure a playoff berth.

“I think they have a shot,” Finebaum said. “Right now, I would take them. And to do that really means they’re going to have to change the outcome of a couple of games that right now they would be favored to lose.

“I mean, they’ve got an early game second week against Texas, which will be a top 3 or 4 team. They have Oregon later in the year at home, another top 3 team. Obviously, we know about Ohio State at the end.”

The Wolverines have significant changes to navigate this season. Not only has Jim Harbaugh departed, but key players such as quarterback J.J. McCarthy, running back Blake Corum, wide receiver Roman Wilson, and several veteran offensive linemen have moved on to the NFL.

Finebaum predicts that Michigan could endure up to three losses and still have a chance at the playoffs.

He expressed doubts about a win over Ohio State but suggested that victories over either Texas, Oregon, or Washington could help the Wolverines punch a ticket to the dance.

“If they can win either Texas, Oregon or Washington, they can finish 10-2, but they might have to win two of those, by the way, because I don’t think they’re gonna beat Ohio State,” Finebaum stated.

“I think 9-3, depending on where the win are, this would be probably the rare team that can make the playoff with more than two losses.”
