Former Dallas Cowboys head coach and current NBC “Sunday Night Football” analyst, Jason Garrett, is reportedly in the running for one of the NCAA vacancies following recent coaching changes.
Garrett, who took over the Dallas reins from Wade Phillips mid-season in 2010 and led the Cowboys until 2019, later served as the New York Giants’ offensive coordinator under Joe Judge in 2020. However, a challenging 2021 season led to his departure.
The Duke Blue Devils are currently on the lookout for a new head coach after Mike Elko left for the Texas A&M job.
According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Garrett is among the potential candidates to fill the void…
“One wild-card option to keep in mind is NBC football analyst Jason Garrett, the former Dallas Cowboys head coach. The 57-year-old Princeton grad has never coached in college football, but he did get strong consideration for the Duke job a few years ago during the search that led to Elko,” Feldman reported.
“Garrett was 85-67 in his decade as the Cowboys head man. Would he want to jump into college coaching now? And if so, would Duke’s leadership want him? We’ll see.”

This isn’t the first time Garrett’s name has been associated with the Duke coaching position.
In 2021, he was considered a favorite for the job, which eventually went to Elko. He was also a finalist for the Stanford Cardinal position last year, before losing out to Troy Taylor.

Garrett’s decade-long tenure with the Cowboys saw regular-season success – but the team struggled in the postseason.
Despite his lack of college coaching experience, Garrett’s name continues to surface in connection with prominent vacancies, leaving many to wonder if the seasoned coach is ready to make the leap to college football.

Garrett is somewhat of a lightning-rod … He certainly has his supporters, but the news of him potentially snagging a college job has been met with a good amount of negativity.
