Texas Longhorns Quarterback Announces Transfer Portal Move In Surprising Twist

The Texas Longhorns’ quarterback situation is undergoing a change as Maalik Murphy, the team’s second-string quarterback, is set to enter the NCAA transfer portal. ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Murphy has informed the coaching staff of his decision to explore transfer options.

Murphy, who made five appearances during the season, had been in a crowded quarterback room. Texas’ starting quarterback, Quinn Ewers, was expected to be a top-10 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft but has chosen to return for another year of college football. This decision effectively closed the door for Murphy to become the Longhorns’ starter.

With highly-touted prospect Arch Manning also in the mix behind Ewers, it’s evident that Murphy could benefit from a fresh start elsewhere. Given his talent and potential, Murphy is likely to draw interest from several prominent NCAA programs.

During his limited playing time this year, the 6-foot-5, 238-pound Murphy passed for 477 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions. Currently ranked No. 3, Texas is gearing up to face No. 2 Washington in the Sugar Bowl, one of the College Football Playoff National Championship semifinals.

Ewers has enjoyed a remarkable 2023 season, completing 70.7 percent of his passes for 3,161 yards and 21 touchdowns, with just six interceptions. He has also contributed with five rushing touchdowns.

Among the notable quarterbacks entering the transfer portal for the 2023-24 season are Dillon Gabriel (committed to Oregon), Riley Leonard (committed to Notre Dame), Dante Moore of UCLA (a former five-star recruit), and D.J. Uiagalelei from Oregon State.
