Statue Of Jackie Robinson Stolen After Damage At Wichita Park

A valuable statue commemorating the baseball legend, Jackie Robinson, has been stolen from a public park in Wichita, Kansas, prompting a city-wide search and widespread condemnation.

The statue pays tribute to Jackie Robinson, the trailblazing athlete who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier back in 1947. Surveillance footage shows two individuals making off with the sculpture under the cover of darkness, and it was reported missing on Thursday morning, with the thieves cutting it at the ankles for removal. All that remained of the statue were Robinson’s feet.

Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan expressed his frustration, highlighting the audacity of those responsible, who stole a statue symbolizing Jackie Robinson’s historical significance and the spirit of baseball. He also emphasized the timing of the theft, occurring just before Black History Month.

Jackie Robinson’s career began with the Kansas City Monarchs in the Negro Leagues before he made history by joining the Brooklyn Dodgers. He not only left an indelible mark on the world of sports but also became an icon in the civil rights movement.

Wichita City Council member Brandon Johnson echoed the sentiments of many residents, describing the theft as “horrendous” and “disgusting.” The community is left feeling hurt and angry, seeking justice for this brazen act.

The Wichita Metro Crime Commission has offered a reward of up to $2,500 for tips leading to arrests and an additional $5,000 for information leading to the statue’s recovery.

Chief Sullivan hopes that local salvage yards will notify the police if the stolen statue is brought in for sale. He also assured the community that those responsible for this theft will be held accountable once the statue is returned.

The Little League nonprofit organization, League 42, named after Jackie Robinson’s iconic Dodgers jersey number, had invested approximately $50,000 in the statue. It was installed in 2021 at McAdams Park, where around 600 children participate in the youth baseball league.
