Sources: Chargers interview Jim Harbaugh first for open position

The Jim Harbaugh sweepstakes in the NFL are poised to intensify, with the Los Angeles Chargers being the first team scheduled to discuss their head-coaching vacancy with Harbaugh, as reported by ESPN and various sources.

Several NFL teams, including Atlanta, Carolina, Las Vegas, Seattle, Tennessee, and Washington, are in pursuit of a new head coach.

Harbaugh, who has prior coaching experience in the NFL, has a history with the Chargers and the Spanos family, who owns the team. Having played for the Chargers in 1999 and 2000, Harbaugh has a connection that may influence the ongoing coaching discussions.

The Chargers are on the lookout for a new head coach and general manager following the dismissal of Brandon Staley and Tom Telesco on December 15, post a 63-21 defeat to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Jim Harbaugh, currently the head coach at Michigan, has taken time off following Michigan’s victory over Washington in the College Football Playoff National Championship. After nine seasons at Michigan, where he secured a national title, Harbaugh is contemplating a potential return to the NFL.

Harbaugh, 60, has been unwavering in his focus on the present, expressing a one-track mind approach when questioned about possible NFL interest or the Chargers during a recent availability.

To enhance his potential NFL return, Harbaugh recently enlisted the services of Don Yee as his new agent. Known for representing Tom Brady, Yee also manages Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton.

Despite leading Michigan to its first national title since 1997, Harbaugh faced challenges throughout the season, including suspensions and NCAA violations.

The Chargers have already conducted seven interviews for their head-coaching vacancy, exploring various options, including interim coach Giff Smith, offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, San Francisco’s Steve Wilks, Baltimore’s Mike Macdonald, and former Minnesota Vikings coach Leslie Frazier. The coaching carousel is in full swing as the Chargers look to secure the right leader for their team.
