Source: Former Alabama Star Safety Caleb Downs Chooses Ohio State

Former Alabama freshman safety Caleb Downs is making a move to Ohio State, as confirmed by a source on Friday night. Downs, a standout five-star prospect in the 2023 class, is known for leading the Crimson Tide in total tackles during his debut season, an impressive feat for a true freshman in the program’s history.

Hailing from Hoschton, Georgia, Downs was ranked No. 11 overall and held the coveted No. 1 safety position in his class. His decision to enter the transfer portal on January 17 sparked interest, with many initially speculating he would join the Georgia Bulldogs due to his previous ties with defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson, who joined the Georgia staff.

Despite efforts from Alabama’s new coach Kalen DeBoer to retain Robinson, he chose to stay with Georgia. During his recruitment, Downs had also considered Ohio State, with the Buckeyes being the runner-up to Alabama at the time.

Now, the Ohio State coaching staff has successfully recruited Downs, who brings three years of eligibility to bolster their defense. His arrival aligns with a wave of impactful transfers to Ohio State, including Kansas State quarterback Will Howard, Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins, and Alabama center Seth McLaughlin. These additions are set to enhance the Buckeyes’ defense, which has shown significant improvement in its second year under coordinator Jim Knowles.
