Sean Casey Expresses Concerns About Aaron Judge’s Transition To Center Field After Juan Soto Trade

The acquisition of Juan Soto by the New York Yankees has sparked some concerns, particularly regarding the team’s decision to potentially use Aaron Judge as their starting center fielder to accommodate Soto in right field.

Former Yankees hitting coach Sean Casey voiced his reservations on the “The Mayor’s Office” podcast, emphasizing the demanding nature of the center field position and expressing doubts about Judge’s suitability due to his stature and potential wear and tear on his body.

Casey also suggested that Yankees manager Aaron Boone might share these concerns. Casey, who had served as the Yankees’ hitting coach in the latter part of the previous season, has a close relationship with Boone from their playing days.

The Yankees find themselves in a predicament with the acquisition of both Juan Soto and Alex Verdugo, along with Giancarlo Stanton occupying the designated hitter role. This leaves them with limited options for a regular center fielder, as they cannot field Soto, Verdugo, Judge, and Stanton simultaneously, while also requiring a strong defensive presence in left field, where Verdugo excels.

As Soto has never played center field in his career and Verdugo primarily occupies corner outfield positions, Judge emerges as the most likely candidate to play center field, despite potential challenges due to the position’s physical demands and Judge’s injury history.

Boone indicated that the team is open to the idea of Judge becoming the regular center fielder, though the situation remains uncertain as the offseason progresses.

While Judge is renowned for his performance in right field, his center field abilities are slightly below average according to Fangraphs. The Yankees may consider using newly acquired Trent Grisham in center field for late innings or in case of injuries.

Casey acknowledged Judge’s willingness to contribute in any way possible but highlighted the physical toll that playing center field can take on players, citing the example of Mike Trout and his injury struggles in recent years.

With Judge approaching the age of 32 and his imposing 6-foot-7 frame, concerns about the potential wear and tear on his legs in center field have arisen.
