Rumors: Mets’ Interest in Lucas Giolito, Kiner-Falefa’s AL East Move

As we step into 2024, the MLB Hot Stove season continues to sizzle with rumors and speculation. Several intriguing free agents and trade prospects are still in play, and we’ve got the latest updates right here.

Mets’ Interest in Lucas Giolito

The New York Mets missed out on signing young pitching sensation Yoshinobu Yamamoto this offseason, who ultimately joined the Dodgers. However, the Mets are now armed with ample financial resources and a pressing need to bolster their starting rotation, especially after trading away Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer last season.

According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are displaying a strong interest in free-agent right-hander Lucas Giolito. Giolito, 29, had a somewhat underwhelming 2023 season, splitting his time between three different teams. Despite this, he boasts a solid track record over the past few seasons. In fact, CBS Sports ranked Giolito as the ninth-best free agent of the 2023-24 class.

In their assessment, CBS Sports highlighted Giolito’s potential for a rebound, stating, “Giolito is on the bright side of 30 and he isn’t far removed from receiving Cy Young Award consideration in three consecutive seasons. That combination should help teams talk themselves into him being a good rebound candidate, albeit for a second consecutive offseason.”

While Giolito may not be a frontline ace anymore, he remains a valuable mid-rotation piece with room for improvement. Given the demand for starting pitchers in the current market, the Mets face stiff competition in pursuing Giolito.

Blue Jays Sign Isiah Kiner-Falefa

The Toronto Blue Jays have bolstered their roster by reaching an agreement with utility player Isiah Kiner-Falefa on a free-agent deal. Robert Murray reports that the deal spans two years, offering Kiner-Falefa $15 million with an additional $1 million in incentives.

Kiner-Falefa, known for his versatility, played a vital role for the division-rival New York Yankees during the 2023 season. While his offensive contributions were modest with a .242/.306/.340 batting line, he did tally six home runs and 14 stolen bases across 113 games. Over his six-season MLB career, he has maintained an OPS+ of 81.

In the 2023 season, Kiner-Falefa showcased his ability to play six different positions, including center field and shortstop. In Toronto, he is expected to serve as a versatile utility player, providing depth in multiple positions. This signing becomes crucial for the Blue Jays, particularly with the anticipated departure of free-agent third baseman Matt Chapman.
