REPORT: Unexpected Contender Emerges Out Of The Blue In Shohei Ohtani Chase

Well. Well. Well.

It seems that the Toronto Blue Jays have positioned themselves as strong contenders in the highly anticipated Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes, and it’s not just about the money.

While the Los Angeles Dodgers have long been considered favorites due to their geographic advantage, financial power, and consistent contention status, an unexpected factor might tilt the scales in favor of the Blue Jays.

ESPN’s Alden Gonzalez reveals a key insight into Ohtani’s decision-making process, stating: “A factor that might be more important, one person familiar with Ohtani’s thinking said: the ballpark, and Ohtani’s comfort within it.”

Despite the Blue Jays being located 2,500 miles away from Ohtani’s Southern California home, their home ballpark, Rogers Centre, could play a pivotal role.

Some baseball executives speculate that the San Francisco Giants, playing in a challenging hitters park, might struggle to secure Ohtani’s services.

On the contrary, the Blue Jays hitter-friendly environment, reflected in Ohtani’s impressive career 1.139 OPS at Rogers Centre, makes them a strong suitor.

Gonzalez emphasizes the significance of ballpark dynamics, noting: “When you’re considering potential landing spots for Ohtani, don’t discount the elements within a ballpark … They might matter more than where it’s located.”

Contrary to the belief prevalent in 2017 when Ohtani signed with the Angels, geography seems to be less of a determining factor now, according to some insiders.

Ohtani, a three-time All-Star and two-time AL MVP, has exceeded expectations since his MLB debut in 2018.

In the 2023 season, he showcased his remarkable skills by hitting .304 with a 1.066 OPS, 44 home runs, and 95 RBIs.

As a pitcher, Ohtani achieved a 10-5 record with a 3.14 ERA and 167 strikeouts in 132 innings pitched (before getting hurt).

The Blue Jays, led by rising stars Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr., along with Cy Young candidate Kevin Gausman, boast a formidable core.

Despite the team’s recent postseason struggles, going 0-2 in the wild card round in 2020, 2022, and 2023, the addition of Ohtani could potentially transform them into legitimate World Series contenders.

Do you think the Jays are true contenders for Ohtani?

Are they just being used as part of a bidding war?

Where do you think he will end up landing???
