Reaction To One Of The Most Controversial Calls In Super Bowl History

It was a crucial 3rd and 8 on the Eagles 15 yard line with 1:54 remaining in the game, tied 35-35.

The world would watch as Patrick Mahomes’ pass would sail way over JuJu Smith-Schuster’s head – only to see a yellow flag come flying in seconds later.

Defensive holding on Eagles cornerback James Bradberry, resulting in an automatic first down.

Referee Carl Cheffers strongly defended the call after the game: “The receiver went to the inside and he was attempting to release to the outside. The defender grabbed the jersey with his right hand and restricted him from releasing to the outside. So, therefore, we called defensive holding… It was a clear case of a jersey grab that caused restriction. There was no debate.”

Unsurprisingly, JuJu Smith-Schuster said he was “100 percent” held by Bradberry.

And to Bradberry’s credit, he admitted he did indeed hold Smith-Schuster on the play: “It was a holding. I tugged his jersey. I was hoping they would let it slide.”

The bottom line is the Eagles didn’t deserve to win that game and their fate was becoming very clear even prior to that flag.

Regardless, the penalty was met with pure anger on social media…
