Quinshon Judkins Chooses Ohio State After Michigan’s National Championship Victory

Quinshon Judkins, former running back for Ole Miss, has announced his transfer to Ohio State via social media. This revelation came shortly after Ohio State’s arch-rival, Michigan, secured a 34-13 victory against Washington in the College Football Playoff National Championship. Judkins didn’t miss the opportunity to take a playful jab at the Wolverines in his announcement.

“I’m looking forward to being a part of a winning culture and helping do my part to beat the TUN (Michigan) bring a Big 10 Championship and National Championship to Columbus,” Judkins wrote. “The RB brotherhood at Ohio State is incredibly special, and I am grateful to have an opportunity to be a part of that.”

Judkins, currently ranked as the top running back and fourth overall prospect in 247Sports’ transfer rankings, is a significant addition to Ohio State, addressing a position of need. As a rising junior, he comes off two consecutive 1,000-yard seasons with the Rebels, concluding the 2023 season with impressive stats of 271 carries for 1,158 yards and 15 touchdowns, leading the SEC in touchdowns. Judkins departs from Oxford, Mississippi, with over 3,000 all-purpose yards and 34 total touchdowns.

In contrast, Ohio State hasn’t seen a 1,000-yard rusher since 2021. Additionally, the Buckeyes have had several running backs enter the transfer portal, including the second-leading rusher, Chip Trayanum, and Miyan Williams, the 2022 rushing leader, who declared for the NFL Draft.

This leaves Ohio State with one proven option, the talented but injury-prone TreVeyon Henderson, who hasn’t made a public decision about his future. Should Henderson leave, Ohio State would have only one running back with at least 15 career carries on its roster, pending Judkins’ addition.

The potential pairing of Henderson and Judkins could create one of the nation’s most formidable running back duos, benefiting both players. Henderson, no longer burdened as the primary back, would still have ample opportunities to shine. Over the past two years, Henderson has missed eight games due to injuries, which adversely affected Ohio State in 2023 when they lacked depth at running back. The split between Henderson and Judkins could be closer to a 50-50 distribution, allowing Ohio State to maximize both options without overworking either, a crucial factor given Henderson’s injury history and a potential incentive for his return as he aims to boost his NFL draft prospects.

While Coach Ryan Day may not completely overhaul his offensive philosophy, there are signs of change as he enters his sixth year as head coach. Ohio State has already secured Will Howard, a new presumed starting quarterback via the transfer portal from Kansas State. Although Howard doesn’t possess the flashy passing style associated with Day’s quarterbacks, he excels as a gritty and tough runner, suited for a scheme emphasizing physical rushing plays. Judkins’ addition aligns with this new direction. Standing at 5-foot-11 and weighing 210 pounds, he excels between the tackles. In his 2023 season, 150 of his 271 carries were on inside zone or power run schemes. His most successful plays came from inside zone looks, averaging 4.6 yards on 95 touches.

Henderson shares a similar playing style, excelling in one-cut downhill runs that allow him to build momentum. Ohio State might not transition to a complete 12-personnel formation and a ground-and-pound approach, but recent additions suggest a renewed emphasis on physicality under Day’s leadership.
