Philadelphia Phillies Lock in Player Contracts, Sidestep Arbitration Headaches

The Philadelphia Phillies didn’t wrap up their salary arbitration duties by Thursday’s deadline but made significant progress with key players.

First on the list was pitcher Ranger Suárez, securing a one-year contract valued at $5.05 million in his second year of arbitration. Although slightly below the earlier $5.8 million projection by Spotrac, Suárez, who went 4-6 with a 4.18 ERA in 2023, contributed to the Phillies’ return to the National League Championship Series.

Pitcher Jeff Hoffman followed, agreeing to a $2.2 million deal in his final arbitration season, an impressive feat after a standout 5-2 record with a 2.41 ERA in 54 relief appearances last season. Hoffman, a potential free agent next season, fell short of Spotrac’s $3 million projection.

Infielder Edmundo Sosa, in his first year of arbitration, sealed a $1.7 million deal. With career highs in home runs (10) and RBI (30), Sosa played a significant role in the Phillies’ 2023 season.

Earlier in the offseason, the Phillies reached agreements with arbitration players Jake Cave ($1 million), Dylan Covey ($850,000), and Garrett Stubbs ($850,000).

Notably, pitcher Gregory Soto, although not among the 23 players exchanging figures with the Phillies, likely settled to avoid arbitration.

The only unsigned player after the deadline was infielder Alec Bohm, who exchanged figures with the Phillies on Thursday night, indicating ongoing negotiations. The Phillies remain focused on finalizing deals and ensuring a strong roster for the upcoming season.
